Artist September, 2014-October, 2014
Tyler Staggs was originally born in Orlando and has been making fine art in Tampa since 2011. He recently received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art with a focus in Sculpture at USF in 2014. His artwork ranges from painting to performance, all focusing on the use of his body to better understand himself.
The work on display at Quench Lounge is a combination of photography, collaged photocopies, and body prints made with black acrylic paint. The photographs are abstract representations of the human body. They are inanimate objects that have been abstracted to resemble the human body. The collaged photocopies are made by photocopying hands and faces directly on the printer to render a reproduction of his body. This same concept is translated in the body prints through transferring paint from the body directly onto paper. The results are immediate images simultaneously allowing deeper interpretation from others. These different works and processes, for Staggs, are a way to better understand himself and the male form through his artistic process.
